The problem: Excel, a 2009 app, and paper
Pilots were logging flights in Excel, in an iOS app written in 2009, and on paper — often all three at once, because none of them did the whole job. Getting a regulator-ready export out of that took days of reconciliation.
A logbook is not a nice-to-have for a working pilot. Currency, licences, and flight hours are what let you legally fly, and they have to be defensible to an authority that asks.

Rebuilt around the regulatory schema
Rather than digitising the paper logbook, we rebuilt it around the modern regulatory schema, with mobile-first data entry and automatic currency calculation. The data model matches what the regulator asks for, so the export is a read rather than a translation.
Offline is the constraint, not a feature
Pilots log flights where there is no signal, then export regulator-ready reports once they are back on the ground. Offline-first is not a bullet point on this product — it is the condition the entire data layer is designed around.

Six years in production
Avilog runs on AWS with PostgreSQL and Redis, and has been in continuous production for six years, serving thousands of pilots. Long enough that we have migrated it, upgraded it, and been paged by it — which is the only honest way to learn what an architecture actually costs.
Brigada still runs the engineering team. That is the strongest evidence we can offer that people stay on projects here: the same relationship has outlasted most agency contracts several times over.
